Explaining Common Auto Body Repair Terms

When you need to get your car's body damage repaired, you'll want to have a thorough grasp of what exactly you're spending your money on. In the auto body repair industry, there is some terminology that might not be familiar to customers. But at Keen's Body Shop, we'll make every effort to ensure that all of your questions are answered and you have a solid understanding of the repair process that your vehicle will undergo. At our local body shop, we take great pride in achieving the highest level of customer satisfaction. One way we do this is by maintaining transparency about our repair processes. Here's a look at some common auto body repair vocabulary terms.

Corrosion

Corrosion occurs when refined metal converts to oxide, carbonate, hydroxide, or sulfide. In the auto body repair industry, the relevant type of corrosion is, of course, rust. When you notice rust on your vehicle, you'll want to get it quickly addressed so that it doesn't spread and become more expensive to take care of.

DRP

DRP is short for Direct Repair Program. This is in reference to the agreement between the body shop and the insurance agency about repairs, record-keeping, and billing.

LKQ

This stands for Like Kind and Quality. Shops sometimes use LKQ parts that have been taken from non-running vehicles. Such parts are thoroughly inspected and can be trusted to provide quality replacements for damaged components.

OEM Parts

OEM is an acronym for original equipment manufacturer and refers to replacement parts made by the same manufacturer with the same specifications and same materials. OEM parts are generally trusted to provide the best fit.

Putty

Putty, or body filler, is a polyester product that can be used for filling in various types of minor auto body damage. It can successfully level out irregularities in the body. Then primer and finish paint are used to complete the repair.

R & R

This stands for remove and replace, and refers to situations where the part has suffered damage to the extent that it will be more economical to replace it than to fix it.
